About

Tom Dugdale is an artist who works in theatrical space and situation, directing, writing, designing, composing music for, and inhabiting works that probe the membrane between performer and performance, the limits of emotion and sentiment, and intersections of performance with science and medicine. In Early 2021, Tom realized NoBody There, an interactive installation that facilitated intimate, cathartic audio encounters with strangers on a park bench. Tom’s next project, Since you asked, was a durational six-hour video performance in twelve distinct episodes, each titled with a “phrase of longing” (i.e. “Take Me”, “Love Me”). Using extreme verbal and gestural repetition, green screen editing techniques, and ambient electronic music, Since you asked challenges the erosion of sentiment and intimacy in our world, which has been intensified by our recent pandemic state. Since you asked is a desperate ritual of self-care, equally therapeutic and indulgent. It is Tom’s first work on video.

Tom Dugdale lives and works in Columbus, Ohio, USA, where he is Assistant Professor of Theatre, Film, and Media Arts at The Ohio State University. He is currently making a new installation, Sometimes I make the shape of a hug with my arms and imagine you inside it, that will invite visitors to arrange thirty-one original songs into their own narratives of love and loss.
