Contemporary Art in Rome

Cris Llarena

I was born in Mexico in 1983 and relocated to the U.S. in 2012. I hold a BFA in Photography from the Allende Institute in San Miguel Allende, Mexico. I am a freelance photographer, educator and producer in Mexico, the U.S. and elsewhere. The sense of community has been a keystone in my personal and professional development. I make images to traverse my interest in the human experience within society, centered in the possibility of igniting social awareness. My images rely on the social struggle to communicate, within the spaces we are forced to inhabit. I have shot exciting assignments for editorial and corporate clients. My work has been exhibited at Centro Cultural “El Nigromante” in San Miguel Mexico, the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo, NY, and the Massachusetts Statehouse in Boston, MA, among others. Additionally, I produce and coordinate photographic workshops, most recently for Mary Ellen Mark. My experience in the photographic workshop industry includes companies such as National Geographic Expeditions, the Santa Fe Photographic workshops and PhotoXpeditions. My current focus is producing a long-term social documentary project on transnational and migrant families in the Boston area. These families face separation due to deportation of the fear thereof. I am interested in exploring the issues that such struggle entails.
