Anna Reber

Artist Statement

Anna Reber was born 1960 in Berne, Switzerland, where she was as well raised. As a child Anna Reber found immense pleasure in painting and drawing. She tried to copy from postcards paintings of the old masters as Van Gogh and Monet.

After her studies in economics Reber moved to Geneva, where she worked for an American company for several years. At that time, painting and drawing was for her a passionate hobby to recreate from work. To get to know the world, she decided some years later to join Swissair and to work as a flight attendant. On her stops all over the world she met artists, visited galleries and museums. She loved to take sketches of the street life in the big cities or to capture the colors and light on beautiful landscapes. She got to know the famous Art Institute in Chicago, which she visited every time on stop overs in Chicago. The more and more the interest in artistic work grew.

In 2005 Reber met the Argentinian-Swiss artist Ricardo Abella in Switzerland. Reber decided to turn her passion for art into profession and started private classes with Abella. In 2010 Reber returned to Chicago for the summer term at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Reber loves spending time outside. Her paintings are often inspired by outdoor ventures, by the colors she sees in daily life and how things are arranged in nature. Reber is primarily an abstract painter, she works with different mediums although oil is her most preferred one. In her abstract work Reber builds forms and colors and knits them together through layers of accumulation.

She tries to give the viewer a sensation of escaping in another world. Her artistic work is influenced by Joan Mitchell and Janaina Tschäpe.

As of 2010 Reber’s work has been shown in exhibitions in Switzerland, Germany, Italy, UK, USA and China.
